Merzouga Desert Activities — Everything the Erg Chebbi Dunes Offer

─────── ◈ ───────

Merzouga sits at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes — one of the two great sand seas in Morocco and the one that most travelers picture when they imagine the Sahara. The dunes themselves are remarkable. But the desert around them is larger and more varied than the view from the road suggests, and the activities available here cover a wider range of experiences than any single visit can fully exhaust.

This page lists every Merzouga desert activity we offer at Your Desert Home luxury camp and in the surrounding Erg Chebbi region. Some are motorized and fast — quad bikes, buggies, 4×4 excursions. Some are slow and traditional — camel trekking, stargazing, sandboarding at dawn. Some are cultural — Khamlia village for Gnawa music, nomadic family visits, the abandoned galena mines of M’Fis. All of them are private, all of them are led by local Berber guides who know this terrain personally, and all of them can be combined into a single stay or booked as standalone experiences.

If you are already planning a Morocco desert tour that passes through Merzouga, these activities form the content of your desert day or days. If you are planning to visit Merzouga independently, this is where your itinerary begins.

How To Combine Activities

─────── ◈ ───────

  • Most guests at Your Desert Home combine two or more activities in a single stay. Here are the most popular combinations:
  • 1 Night — Classic Desert Experience Sunset camel trek → camp arrival → Berber dinner + campfire → sunrise on foot → sandboarding before breakfast
  • 2 Nights — Full Desert Exploration Day 1: Sunset camel trek → camp Day 2: 4×4 morning (Khamlia + M’Fis + nomadic family) → sandboarding afternoon → sunset quad or buggy → second campfire Day 3: Sunrise camel trek → return to Merzouga
  • Add-on to Any Night Quad biking or buggy at sunset before the camel trek departs — add 1.5 hours before your standard camel trek time

Private Transfer To Your Desert Home Camp

─────── ◈ ───────

We collect you from your Merzouga hotel by private 4×4 and transfer you to the camel trek departure point — a 30-minute drive through the lower dunes. Road transfers also available from Erfoud, Rissani, Ouarzazate, Fes, and Marrakech. Closest airports: Errachidia (ERH), Ouarzazate (OZZ), and Fes (FEZ).

If you are arriving with your own driver, only Your Desert Home vehicles are permitted inside the camp — your driver must contact us the day before to confirm the access route. Self-driving guests should not attempt to reach the camp independently; secure parking in Merzouga is available on request.

Merzouga Tours and Activities FAQ

Do I need to book activities in advance or can I arrange them on arrival in Merzouga?

We strongly recommend booking in advance—particularly camel treks and overnight stays during high season (March, April, October, and November) when availability fills quickly. Motorized activities (quad, buggy, 4×4) are more flexible and can sometimes be arranged on short notice, but booking ahead guarantees your preferred timing and guide.

Yes — most guests do. A popular full-day combination is a morning 4×4 excursion (Khamlia, M’Fis, nomadic family), an afternoon sandboarding session, and a sunset camel trek to the overnight camp. Contact us and we build the day around your group.

Yes — all activities run throughout the year. In summer (June to August), motorized activities and camel treks are timed for early morning or late afternoon to avoid peak heat. In winter (December to February), the desert is cool during the day and cold at night — we advise bringing warm layers for evening camp stays and early morning activities.

Every activity on this page is designed for first-time desert visitors. All motorized activities are guided. Camel treks are led by Berber guides with lifelong experience. Sandboarding requires no prior skill. The only activity that involves any physical effort beyond walking is the uphill climb between sandboarding runs — which takes 5 to 10 minutes at a gentle pace.

There is no minimum group size. Solo travelers, couples, families, and small groups all book the same private activities. The price varies by group size — contact us with your group size and dates for a tailored quote.
