2 Nights Camel Trekking in Merzouga — When One Sunset Is Not Enough

There is a moment that happens to almost every guest on their first night at Your Desert Home—usually around midnight, lying in the tent entrance looking at the stars—when they think, “I should have booked two nights.” Two nights of camel trekking in Merzouga is the experience that those guests come back to have.

The first night answers the question of what the desert looks like. The second night answers the question of what it feels like when you stop being a visitor and start being someone who is simply in the Erg Chebbi. The second sunrise is different from the first. The silence becomes comfortable rather than unfamiliar. The dunes look different when you know which direction you’ve come from.

Between the two nights, the second day is dedicated entirely to the wider Merzouga desert region—the things a single overnight stay doesn’t have time for: Khamlia village for live Gnawa music performed by a community whose musical tradition has roots in Mali and Sudan, an off-road drive to M’Fis and its abandoned galena mines, a genuine nomadic family visit for tea in their Berber tent, and a sandboarding session on the dune slope nearest to camp. All the activities that most guests on 1-night stays ask about but can’t fit in.

Our Morocco desert tours that include a full dedicated Merzouga day—the 9-day tours from Casablanca, the 8-day tours from Tangier, and the 4-day Fes to Merzouga round trip—are all built around this two-night structure because it is genuinely the minimum time needed to understand this part of Morocco.

↝ Frequently Asked Questions

What time does the camel trek depart from Merzouga?

Your Desert Home tents are built structures with canvas walls, real beds, ensuite bathrooms, hot showers, and electrical power during the evening hours. The word “camping” understates the experience—these are the comforts of a hotel room in a setting that no hotel can replicate.

No—the families we visit live in the desert as a way of life, not as a cultural performance. Our Berber guide has personal relationships with several nomadic families in the region, and the visits are genuine social encounters over tea rather than arranged demonstrations. We ask that guests follow the guide’s lead on photography and gifts.

Rain in Merzouga is rare—Erg Chebbi receives an average of less than 50 mm of precipitation per year. In the event of severe weather, we adjust the camel trek departure time or transfer guests to camp by 4×4 instead. The camp itself is fully weatherproofed.

We recommend booking at least 5 days ahead and 2 to 3 weeks ahead during high season in March, April, October, and November, when camp availability fills quickly. The overnight experience is included in all our Marrakech desert tours, Fes desert tours, and tours from Tangier—booking through a tour secures the camp night automatically

Subject to availability, yes. If you arrive for one night and decide you want to stay a second, let the camp manager know on your first evening, and we will check availability and arrange the extension. We always recommend booking 2 nights in advance rather than hoping to extend—camp spaces during high season are limited.
