↝ Overview of the 7-day Tangier to Marrakech tour

7-Day Tour from Tangier to Marrakech — Chefchaouen, Volubilis, Meknes, Fes and the Sahara

7-Day Tour from Tangier to Marrakech (with Volubilis and Meknes)

Our 7-day tour from Tangier to Marrakech is the most complete one-way crossing from Morocco’s north to its south—the only version of this route that adds Volubilis and Meknes to the journey between Chefchaouen and Fes. On Day 2, rather than driving straight from the blue medina to Fes, the route detours through the remarkably preserved Roman ruins of Volubilis and the imperial grandeur of Meknes—two stops that most Tangier tours skip entirely because they require an extra day to include without rushing.

From there, Day 3 is a full guided day in the Fes medina, Day 4 crosses the Middle Atlas to the Erg Chebbi dunes, Day 5 covers Todra Gorge and Dades Valley, Day 6 passes through Ouarzazate and Ait Benhaddou to Marrakech, and Day 7 is a full guided exploration of Marrakech itself. As a fully private tour from Tangier, your vehicle, two local city guides, and a schedule built around your group are yours from the first pickup at Tangier airport or port to the final airport transfer in Marrakech. Every stop can be adjusted through our tailor-made Morocco tours service.

↝ Why Choose This 7-Day Tour From Tangier To Marrakech?

The most common Tangier to Marrakech itinerary runs: Chefchaouen, Fes, desert, Todra Gorge, and Marrakech. Our 7-day tour from Tangier to Marrakech runs: Chefchaouen, Volubilis, Meknes, Fes, desert, Todra Gorge, and Marrakech. The difference is Day 2—a stop at the finest Roman archaeological site in North Africa and one of Morocco’s four imperial cities, both of which most Tangier departures never reach because the route runs out of days before it gets there.

That addition matters because Volubilis and Meknes aren’t minor detours. Volubilis’s floor mosaics and standing columns are among the best-preserved Roman remains in Africa, and Meknes’s Bab el Mansour gate is one of the most monumental pieces of architecture in the country. Both deserve time, and this itinerary gives it to them. Furthermore, the rest of the tour maintains full depth—a dedicated local guide for Fes, a luxury desert camp for the Sahara night, and a dedicated local guide for Marrakech on Day 7. As a local Morocco tour operator, we provide specialist guides for both imperial cities rather than relying on a single driver to cover both from the front seat.

↝ 7-Day Morocco Itinerary: Day-by-Day Tour Plan

Day 1: Tangier ⇢ Chefchaouen

Your 7-day tour from Tangier to Marrakech begins with a pickup from Tangier airport, the Tangier Med ferry port, or your hotel. The two-hour drive south through the Rif Mountain foothills leads to Chefchaouen—Morocco’s famous Blue City, where blue-washed walls, narrow medina lanes, and a genuinely calm mountain pace make it unlike any other town in the country.

After check-in, the afternoon and evening are yours to explore the medina at your own pace—wandering the blue alleys, browsing the artisan souks, and settling into a café for traditional Moroccan food before an overnight stay in your riad.

Day 2: Chefchaouen ⇢ Volubilis ⇢ Meknes ⇢ Fes

After breakfast, a scenic drive through Rif villages leads south to Volubilis—a UNESCO-listed Roman city where remarkably preserved floor mosaics, triumphal arches, and 3rd-century public buildings offer a genuinely vivid window into ancient North African life. Walking through the site takes around an hour and is one of the most atmospheric stops on the entire route.

From Volubilis, the drive continues to Meknes—Morocco’s former capital under Sultan Moulay Ismail and one of its four imperial cities. After lunch, the medina visit covers the monumental Bab el Mansour gate, the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, and the vast Lahdim Square before continuing to Fes for the night.

Day 3: Fes—Full-Day Guided Medina Tour

A knowledgeable local guide leads your full day inside the UNESCO-listed Fes medina—the Royal Palace gates, the Chouara Tanneries, the University of Al-Qarawiyyin, the Al-Attarine Madrasa, the Nejjarine Fountain, and the covered lanes of Fes el-Bali, where traditional crafts have continued for centuries. The tour also covers the Mellah—Fes’s former Jewish quarter—before finishing at an ancient fortress with a panoramic view over the entire city.

You return to your riad in the evening, having genuinely explored one of the best-preserved medieval cities in the Islamic world.

Day 4: Fes ⇢ Ifrane ⇢ Middle Atlas ⇢ Ziz Valley ⇢ Merzouga

After breakfast, the route heads south through the Middle Atlas Mountains, with a stop in Ifrane—thelpine mountain town often called the Switzerland of Morocco—before the cedar forests near Azrou, where wild Barbary macaques frequently appear roadside. Lunch follows at a local restaurant before the drive descends into the Ziz Valley palm oasis and on to Merzouga by mid-afternoon.

A camel trek carries you into the Erg Chebbi dunes as the light deepens, pausing atop a high dune for sunset. The trek continues to your luxury desert camp for dinner, Berber drumming, and a night beneath an exceptional desert sky.

Day 5: Merzouga ⇢ Rissani ⇢ Todra Gorge ⇢ Dades Valley

An early sunrise over the dunes is well worth the alarm. After breakfast at camp, you return to Merzouga by camel or 4×4, with an optional stop at the Rissani souk on market days (Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday)—the historic trading town where Morocco’s ruling Alaouite dynasty was founded. The route continues to Todra Gorge in Tinghir, where 300-meter limestone walls rise above a narrow canyon carved by the Todra River.

The afternoon continues through Dades Valley and its famous monkey finger rock formations to your hotel in Boumalne Dades for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 6: Dades Valley ⇢ Ouarzazate ⇢ Ait Benhaddou ⇢ High Atlas ⇢ Marrakech

After breakfast, the route follows the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through Ouarzazate—the Hollywood of Africa—with an optional visit to Atlas Studios, the largest film studio on the continent. Our dedicated Ouarzazate tours page covers the city in more depth if you’d like to extend this stop.

From there, the UNESCO-listed Ait Benhaddou Kasbah—a filming location for Gladiator, Prince of Persia, and Game of Thrones—offers a proper walking exploration before the route crosses the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. You arrive in Marrakech by late afternoon, with the evening free to take a first walk through Jemaa el-Fna Square.

Day 7: Marrakech—Full-Day Guided City Tour

A local guide leads your full day—the Koutoubia Mosque, Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, Ben Youssef Madrasa, and the medina’s covered souks—before an optional afternoon at the Majorelle Garden. The evening is yours on Jemaa el-Fna Square or at a rooftop café overlooking the old city.

A final transfer to Marrakech Menara Airport or Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport is arranged depending on your departure flight. You can also explore onward options via our Marrakech desert tours page.

↝ Frequently Asked Questions

Why does this tour include Volubilis and Meknes when other Tangier tours don't?

Because it has seven days instead of five or six — the extra days on Day 2 make it possible to stop there without rushing Fes or the desert. Both Volubilis and Meknes earn their place as full stops rather than drive-past mentions.

Around one hour walking through the ruins — enough to see the main mosaics, the triumphal arch, and the forum. If you’d like to linger longer, tell your guide and the Meknes visit adjusts accordingly.

Yes — a similar 7-day route departing from Casablanca is available through our Casablanca desert tours page. The itinerary structure is similar, but the Day 1 starting point and first-day stops differ.
