↝ Overview of the 12-day Morocco tour from Tangier
12-Day Morocco Tour from Tangier — Two Seas, the Blue City, the Sahara and the Atlantic Coast
Our 12-day Morocco tour from Tangier is the most complete route we run from the north—the only itinerary in our Tangier collection that adds Essaouira on the Atlantic coast as a final chapter before the return to Marrakech. The route traces the full arc of Morocco: from the Mediterranean meeting point at Cap Spartel and the Hercules Cave on Day 1, through Chefchaouen’s blue medina with a full free day, across to Volubilis, Meknes, and a full guided day in Fes, south through the Middle Atlas to the Erg Chebbi dunes with a dedicated Merzouga day, through Todra Gorge and Dades Valley, over the High Atlas via Ait Benhaddou to Marrakech, and finally west to Essaouira’s windswept Atlantic ramparts.
Twelve days allows nothing to feel rushed. Two nights in Chefchaouen. Two nights in Merzouga. A full guided city day in Fes. A full guided city day in Marrakech. A coastal overnight in Essaouira before the final return to Marrakech for the airport transfer. This is a fully private tour from Tangier, with your own vehicle, two dedicated local city guides, and a schedule built exclusively around your group. Every stop can be adjusted through our tailor-made Morocco tours service.
↝ Why Choose This 12-Day Tour From Tangier?
The 10-day version of this route covers Cape Spartel, Chefchaouen, Volubilis, Meknes, Fes, the Sahara, Todra Gorge, Ait Benhaddou, and Marrakech. Our 12-day Morocco tour from Tangier adds two things: a full guided day in Marrakech that the 10-day version compresses, and—most distinctively—two days on the Atlantic coast at Essaouira. That final coastal chapter gives the journey a natural geographic closure: you started where two seas meet at Cap Spartel on Day 1, and you end beside the Atlantic at Essaouira on Day 11.
Essaouira is also the most different stop on the entire route—a UNESCO-listed 18th-century fortified port town where blue boats, cannon-lined ramparts, and a working fishing harbor replace the kasbahs and medinas of the interior. After eleven days of mountains, desert, and imperial cities, the Atlantic coast provides a genuine change of atmosphere rather than simply more of the same. As a local Morocco tour operator, we’ve structured the twelve days so that every day earns its place—nothing is padding, and nothing is rushed.

↝ 12-Day Morocco Itinerary: Day-by-Day Tour Plan
Day 1: Tangier—Cap Spartel, Hercules Cave, and Medina
Your 12-day Morocco tour from Tangier begins with a pickup from Tangier airport, the Tangier Med ferry port, or your hotel. The afternoon begins at the Hercules Cave—a natural sea chamber where the ocean has carved an opening shaped like Africa itself into the limestone cliff above the Atlantic. From there, the drive continues to Cap Spartel, a windswept headland at the northwestern tip of Africa where the Atlantic and Mediterranean meet.
The route then returns through Tangier’s old Medina and Kasbah—a layered city whose architecture reflects centuries of contact between Europe and Africa—before dinner and an overnight stay in your hotel.
Day 2: Tangier ⇢ Chefchaouen
After breakfast, the route turns south into the Rif Mountains towards Chefchaouen—Morocco’s famous Blue City, where blue-washed walls, narrow medina lanes, and a genuinely calm mountain pace make it unlike any other town in the country. You arrive by early afternoon with time to check in and begin exploring before dinner.
Day 3: Full Free Day in Chefchaouen
Today belongs entirely to Chefchaouen—no driver, no schedule, no next stop. Wander the blue medina at your own pace, visit the old Kasbah and its small museum, walk up to the Spanish Mosque for a panoramic view over the blue rooftops, or follow the path to the Ras El Maa spring at the edge of the old city. For those who want to get into the mountains, an optional drive to the Akchour waterfalls is available as a half-day add-on.
Day 4: Chefchaouen ⇢ Volubilis ⇢ Meknes ⇢ Fes
After breakfast, a scenic drive through Rif villages leads south to Volubilis—a UNESCO-listed Roman city where remarkably preserved floor mosaics, triumphal arches, and 3rd-century public buildings offer a vivid window into ancient North Africa. From there, the drive continues to Meknes for lunch and visits to the Bab al-Mansour gate and Place El Hedim before arriving in Fes for the night.
Day 5: Fes—Full-Day Guided Medina Tour
A knowledgeable local guide leads your full day inside the UNESCO-listed Fes medina—entering through Bab Boujloud and covering the Bou Inania Madrasa, the Nejjarine Fountain, the Chouara Tanneries, Al-Qarawiyyin University, and the Mellah—finishing at a hilltop viewpoint over the whole city. A second night in Fes follows.
Day 6: Fes ⇢ Ifrane ⇢ Middle Atlas ⇢ Ziz Valley ⇢ Merzouga
After breakfast, the route heads south through the Middle Atlas Mountains—stopping in Ifrane and the cedar forests near Azrou, where wild Barbary macaques frequently appear roadside—before lunch in Midelt and the descent through the Ziz Valley palm oasis to Merzouga. A camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes delivers sunset from atop a high dune, followed by dinner, Berber drumming, and a night at your luxury desert camp.
Day 7: Full Day Exploring the Merzouga Desert
An early sunrise over the dunes is well worth setting an alarm. After breakfast, the day begins in Khamlia village for live Gnawa music, continues off-road to M’Fis abandoned mining village, and includes a genuine nomadic family visit for tea in their Berber tent. After lunch, the afternoon is free for sandboarding, a quad bike or buggy ride, or simply relaxing at your riad’s pool. Dinner and a second night in Merzouga complete the day.
Day 8: Merzouga ⇢ Rissani ⇢ Todra Gorge ⇢ Dades Valley
After breakfast, the route continues west through Rissani—the historic caravan town with a traditional souk on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays—before continuing to Todra Gorge in Tinghir, where 300-meter limestone walls rise sharply above a narrow canyon. After lunch and a walk through the gorge, the afternoon continues through Dades Valley and its monkey finger rock formations to your hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 9: Dades Valley ⇢ Rose Valley ⇢ Ouarzazate ⇢ Ait Benhaddou ⇢ Marrakech
After breakfast, the route passes through the Rose Valley near Kalaat M’Gouna—fragrant rose fields used to produce rose water and local cosmetics—and through Ouarzazate, the Hollywood of Africa, with an optional Atlas Studios visit. Our dedicated Ouarzazate tours page covers the city in more depth if you’d like to linger. From there, the UNESCO-listed Ait Benhaddou Kasbah offers a walking exploration before the High Atlas Mountains crossing via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass leads into Marrakech by evening.
Day 10: Marrakech—Full-Day Guided City Tour
A local guide leads your full day—Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, Ben Youssef Madrasa, the Koutoubia Mosque, and the medina souks—before an optional afternoon at the Majorelle Garden. The evening is yours on Jemaa el-Fna Square. Explore onward options via our Marrakech desert tours page if you’re staying longer.
Day 11: Marrakech ⇢ Essaouira
After breakfast, the drive west passes through argan tree groves—keep an eye out for goats climbing the branches, a distinctly Moroccan sight—before arriving in Essaouira, a UNESCO-listed 18th-century Atlantic port town with cannon-lined ramparts, a working fishing harbor, and a medina known for its thuya wood artisans. The afternoon is yours to explore the Skala fortress, the fishing port, or simply sit with fresh seafood by the harbor.
Day 12: Essaouira ⇢ Marrakech Airport Transfer
After a final morning in Essaouira—a last walk along the ramparts or one more browse through the artisan quarter—the drive east returns to Marrakech for your airport transfer, bringing your 12-day Morocco tour from Tangier to a close.
