↝ Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1 — Marrakech ⇢ High Atlas Mountains ⇢ Ait Ben Haddou ⇢ Erg Chebbi
Your 2-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour begins with an early morning pickup from your riad or hotel in Marrakech. Departing early is essential — it ensures you reach Merzouga in time for the camel trek and sunset over Erg Chebbi. As you leave the city, the road climbs steadily into the High Atlas Mountains. Along the way, your guide shares stories of Berber villages and ancient mountain trade routes. Eventually, you reach the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 meters—the highest paved road in North Africa—where the views are genuinely breathtaking.
After descending through the mountains, you stop at the panoramic viewpoint above Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has been inhabited for over a thousand years and served as a filming location for Gladiator, Babel, and Game of Thrones. From there, the route continues south through pre-Saharan valleys and date palm oases until the golden wall of Erg Chebbi dunes appears on the horizon. Upon arriving in Merzouga, your cameleer leads you into the desert at sunset. Afterwards, the trek continues to your luxury desert camp, where dinner, Berber music, and an extraordinary starlit sky await you.
Day 2 — Merzouga ⇢ Ziz Valley ⇢ Middle Atlas to Fes
Wake up before sunrise on day 2—the dawn light over Erg Chebbi is one of the most beautiful moments of the entire tour. After breakfast at the camp, your 4×4 departs north towards Fes. The route takes you through the spectacular Ziz Valley, where a vast oasis of palm trees stretches along the river below a panoramic viewpoint. Your guide stops here so you can take in the view before continuing north into the Middle Atlas Mountains.
As you climb into the Middle Atlas, the landscape shifts completely—from desert sand to cedar forests filled with cool mountain air. Near Ifrane, you stop roadside where wild Barbary macaques often appear among the cedar trees. It is a surprising and memorable contrast to the golden dunes you left behind that morning. Then, the road descends towards the ancient imperial city of Fes. In the afternoon, your driver drops you at your riad or hotel in the Fes medina. Your 2-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour is complete
