Overnight Camel Trekking in Merzouga — Into the Desert at Sunset, Out at Sunrise
There is a specific kind of stillness that only the desert at night offers—not the silence of an empty room, but the silence of a landscape so large and so genuinely dark that the usual background noise of modern life has no surface to reflect from. Overnight camel trekking in Merzouga is the experience that delivers that stillness. You enter the Erg Chebbi dunes by camel at sunset, you sleep in the desert, and you return by camel at sunrise. Between those two rides, the night is yours.
The overnight experience is the single most commonly requested activity from guests on all of our Morocco desert tours. It is included in every itinerary that passes through Merzouga—not as an optional add-on, but as the central chapter of the desert day. At Your Desert Home, the overnight experience is built around fifteen private luxury tents, each with its own ensuite bathroom, positioned to give each guest an unobstructed view of the dunes from their entrance.
The evening unfolds in a sequence that feels designed rather than improvised: the camel trek arrival as the sunset light peaks, the campfire lit while dinner is being prepared, the Berber drumming that carries across the sand, and eventually the silence that settles when the music stops and everyone drifts toward their tent. The sky above Erg Chebbi is a dark sky zone—no significant light pollution within 50 kilometers. On most nights, the Milky Way is visible with the naked eye before midnight.
The sunrise camel trek the following morning is the closing chapter. Most guests walk up to the nearest dune crest on foot first, then mount the camels for the return ride to Merzouga as the desert comes back into the light.

↝ Frequently Asked Questions
What time does the camel trek depart from Merzouga?
Your Desert Home tents are built structures with canvas walls, real beds, ensuite bathrooms, hot showers, and electrical power during the evening hours. The word “camping” understates the experience—these are the comforts of a hotel room in a setting that no hotel can replicate.
Is the tent genuinely comfortable or is this camping in the rough sense?
No—the families we visit live in the desert as a way of life, not as a cultural performance. Our Berber guide has personal relationships with several nomadic families in the region, and the visits are genuine social encounters over tea rather than arranged demonstrations. We ask that guests follow the guide’s lead on photography and gifts.
What happens if it rains?
Rain in Merzouga is rare—Erg Chebbi receives an average of less than 50 mm of precipitation per year. In the event of severe weather, we adjust the camel trek departure time or transfer guests to camp by 4×4 instead. The camp itself is fully weatherproofed.
How far in advance should I book the overnight experience
We recommend booking at least 5 days ahead and 2 to 3 weeks ahead during high season in March, April, October, and November, when camp availability fills quickly. The overnight experience is included in all our Marrakech desert tours, Fes desert tours, and tours from Tangier—booking through a tour secures the camp night automatically
Can I extend a 1-night stay to 2 nights after I arrive?
Subject to availability, yes. If you arrive for one night and decide you want to stay a second, let the camp manager know on your first evening, and we will check availability and arrange the extension. We always recommend booking 2 nights in advance rather than hoping to extend—camp spaces during high season are limited.
